| The
year was 1935. A post card could be mailed for a penny and lunch could be
purchased for 25 cents. Sixteen women who represented various sectors of
the Baton Rouge economy met at Anderson's Tea Room that year and chartered
Quota International of Baton Rouge. Some of the professions of the charter
members were: pharmacist, college dean, attorney, printing company owner
and life underwriter. Quota has had a significant impact on the Baton Rouge
community since that time.
In 1951, Quota initiated the annual Open Door Tour, a guided tour of private homes in the Baton Rouge area that have exceptional interior and architectural design features. The Open Door Tour has continued as the organization's main fundraiser to the present day. Contributions to the Open Door Tour have enabled Quota to meet the needs of speech and hearing impaired individuals as well as supporting projects benefiting disadvantaged women and children. Quota was a founding member organization of the Baton Rouge Speech and Hearing Foundation, which provides comprehensive speech and hearing testing and therapy services. Quota contributes funds to support BRSHF programs and to help make them accessible to individuals regardless of their ability to pay. Quota also donated $100,000 to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge to initiate a counselor program to help deaf students attend the University and recently implemented the "Deaf Talk" program at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital, which provides instant interpreting services to deaf patients through video conferencing. Baton Rouge Quota championed universal infant hearing screening to the Quota International organization and these programs now exist in many states and countries. Disadvantaged Women and Children is also an important focus of Quota's service efforts. The organization has supported various programs at Myriam's House, America's House, Habitat for the Humanities, and the Baton Rouge Child Advocacy Center. Quota furnished one of the nursery rooms at the YWCA Istrouma Teen Learning Center, which provides childcare for teen parents completing their high school education. Quota has contributed funds as well as the time and talents of its members to help in these projects. Quota International of Baton Rouge is affiliated with Quota International, Incorporated which has clubs in 15 countries worldwide. The motto of Quota International is "We Share" meaning that members will share their ideas and talents to encourage other members and to meet the needs in their respective communities. Quota International of Baton Rouge is a leader in the International Organization. Two members have served as International President - Frances Landry and Bobbie Carey - and numerous members have held leadership roles at all levels. |
